Beautiful Losers celebrates the spirit behind one of the most influential cultural moments of a generation.
The culture began in early 1990's when a a group of likeminded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. With almost no influence from the mainstream art world and their life stories, this group of young creatives somehow created a movement that has been transorming pop culture.
Set in New York, the film focuses on the careers and work of a group of artists who are considered leaders within this culture. The film aims to tell personal stories from each artist and show the idea of how the outside becomes 'in' as it explores the creative ethos connecting these artists and today's youth. The film includes interviews with each artist, explaining their reason behind their individual 'do-it-yourself' method.
The film was directed by Aaron Rose and co-directed by Joshua Leonard. It was produced by Sidetrack Films.
