Interview with Gareth Moody
19/03/2009

Chronicles of Never is known for creating unique mens and womans fine jewellery and clothing.  Ex-Ksubi designer Gareth Moody first started Chronicles of Never in 2006 with the concept of Neverland. Gareth draws direct inspiration from cubism, space, mathematics, architecture, geometry and industrial materials.

Gareth’s designs include uniquely designed basics such as singlet’s, t-shirts, jeans, hoodies, scarf’s, pants, shoes and vests. He also makes an amazing collection of fine jewellery. Most recently, he launched an eye wear collection. His collections are now followed and distributed worldwide.

I recently got in contact with Gareth Moody to talk about his inspirations, designs and life after Ksubi…

How are you Gareth?

Well thanks, I'm on the road.

Have you always been creative? Did you think you would be where you are now when you were younger?

Yes, I suppose I have, in one form or another. I picked this up from my mother Bronwyn, she happens to be very creative herself, as a youngster she was very encouraging in the arts. As far as where I am now, I feel I’m where I'm supposed to be at this point in time, I try and live life presently, I have always been this way even when I was much younger, I've been letting the days unfold and this is where the unfolding has led me. I've never looked too far into the future.

After leaving Ksubi you started up Chronicles of Never. What do you think separates/differs Chronicles of Never from Ksubi?

They are day and night. The previous was a collective, a mash of personalities, ideals and concepts. The latter being C.Ø.N is a solo project, the concept is focused and precise and the aesthetics are minimal and dark: this obviously is not on the same path.

What currently inspires you and your designs?

Love

Do you find it hard to distance yourself from certain pressures and traps that are commonly part of the fashion industry?

No not really, I don't let those things in, I focus on what I'm doing.

If you weren't designing where do you think you would be?

I don't have an answer for that, this is where I am.

What would be your ideal creative process (with no deadlines, business or money to worry about)?

Lots of design time, less distractions and a muse for inspiration.

What are you currently reading?

Love in the time of cholera.

Who would you love to see wearing you designs?

Pass.

What are you favourite Sydney haunts?

Castle rock, Collins, restricted premises and China Heights.

With the acronym of CON behind chronicles of never, do you feel there is a negative or almost shallow side of fashion design? and the fact that it may represent a false reality?

Yes, of course that element exists, it's important to be aware of it, and to keep reigns on it. I like to look at it from all sides.

What's next for Chronicles of Never?

Day by day.
