Interview with Stella Maxwell
14/04/2009

Stella Maxwell is the name of everyone's lips at the moment. Stella was first picked up by Ali McD models in Dunedin before signing with Micheal Hooker, whom then took her overseas to model with Viva Paris. In a matter of months (very few) Stella has gone from being a University student to walking on the runway for the likes of Luella Bartley and being photographed for Alexander McQueen. Stella had basically no local work on her books before being flown overseas, which is very rare for a girl so new.

Stella is currently located in Paris, I luckily had the chance to talk to her before her schedule becomes even busier....

How are you?

I'm good good! Loving Paris and everything that's happening at the moment, it's a very cool time!

Has modelling always been something you have wanted to do?

No...I was a very shy child, but as I've gotten older I've come to love being in front of the camera. At school I loved photography, which helped me a lot as model because it taught me how to move and create a good picture.

How does it feel to be one of the only (if not only) New Zealand model to be launched directly/ instantly into the international modelling circuit?

It's great! I would have loved to have been developed in New Zealand but the timing for me was perfect for going straight to Paris. I was also very lucky to have gotten with the agencies I did so I'm working hard now.

What's one thing you think many people misjudge or misunderstand about the modelling industry?

People think it's a very easy job, but there are so many elements to it that people never see or hear about. Like competition, pressure, making new friends.. Luckily I'm a very easy going person, so I can handle these things but I, as well as the other models find it difficult sometimes.

Over the recent fashion weeks what has been your favourite runway show?

Luella. I loved everything about it, working with the best hair and makeup team and walking for an amazing designer with top models...what could be better!

What was your earliest fashion memory?

My mum always had amazing taste in clothes and perfume. I remember smelling her Calvin Klein perfume and thinking it was amazing.

Whose style do you admire?

Elise Helene Gatchene

What do you like to get up to in your spare time?

Discover Paris with other models...go for coffee and dinner together

Best and worst thing about your job?

Best: Creating something interesting and beautiful with people who are so creative and passionate. Worst: Castings...

What do you like to do when you’re bored backstage or on location?

I talk a lot with the people I'm working with, but if not I'll use the internet or read a magazine.

Did you follow fashion or the modelling world before becoming a model?

Not at all, so i definitely had a crash course my first few weeks in Paris. But now I know so much and have the opportunity to work with and meet the top people in the industry, its really cool.

What five things can't you live without?

Coffee, my viva book, heels, my phone, skype.

What's next on your schedule?

I’m flying to London tomorrow for the McQueen look book shooting with Tara Gill, then I spend Easter weekend with my roomate Elise in Paris, then off to shoot in Sweden for the week with Queeny Van Der Zande.

Stella later said 'McQueen lookbook was amazinggggg!!' - we're gonna just have to wait for the photos!
